freebsd port update, monitor outdated port with portsnap

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

we have about 15 freebsd servers with us, ranging from freebsd 4.7 to freebsd 7. most of the server need to be patched regularly, except servers that are not accessible from public network. one of the method we use to monitor outdated port is using portsnap cron, it update the port tree base on the date/time you configured on crontab, and when there is any port is outdated, it will notify us through email from system message.

setting up port tree update on cron

fire up your crontab with crontab -e and add this line;

0 7 * * * portsnap -I cron update && pkg_version -vIL=

this will update the port tree every morning 7am and if there is any output from the command pkg_version -vIL=, it will send an email to system root.

alias root to your email address

if you wish to receive the notification through your email, on /etc/aliases file, alias root to your_email_address, remember to run newaliases command after update the file.

Email notification from different servers.

Port that outdated and need to be upgraded.

Blog Rush will Perform Major Changes in 48 Hours

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Within 48 hours from now, BlogRush is going to make some major changes on their system; some important one included;

100% MANUAL BLOG REVIEW

Our team is going to be manually reviewing every single new blog that
registers to participate in the BlogRush Network.

We’ll be applying some quality guidelines and criteria to our
decision-making process. (We’ll be publishing these guidelines very
soon.) If a blog does not meet our guidelines and criteria, THEY
WILL BE REJECTED from the network and not allowed to join — i.e.
they won’t be able to serve our widget, refer other users, or have
their blog posts distributed across our network. They will have no
access to any BlogRush services.

MORE CATEGORIES

We’re going to be greatly expanding our directory of categories to
increase the relevancy of post links appearing in the widget on your
blog — this will also increase click-rates (and traffic) for all
members.

IMPROVED REPORTING

SPECIAL NOTE TO ALL LOW-TRAFFIC MEMBERS: In the near future we’ll be
giving our low-traffic members (those that need more traffic the
most) the BULK of our bonus credit allocations. You’ll get a ton
more bonus credits than high-traffic members because you really need
it. It’s only FAIR!

IMPROVED NETWORK DISTRIBUTION

A few of our users have noticed that they’re building up credits
faster than the system is using them. This will eventually balance
itself out as the network continues to “adjust” to the growth levels
and traffic patterns of each category

BLOG POST CONTROLS

For example, you can add a keyword or phrase and create a new post
filter. If you ever create a post on your blog (while you have that
filter active — and you can add/delete them at anytime) that
contains one of those keywords in the TITLE of your blog post, that
post…

WILL *NOT* BE SHOWN ACROSS THE NETWORK. And you won’t use any of
your syndication credits!

Good work BlogRush team members, I am waiting you guys to come back Live! again with those major improvements.

Replaced Discoloration MacBook Casing

Monday, March 12th, 2007

Update 13 March 2007 23:43

Well well well… disappointment disappointment, the cover case started to turn into yellowish. It seem like replace new case doesn’t solve my Macbook Discoloration problem. Very very very disappointed with the MacBook I got, I should get the Black MacBook if I know the problem still haven’t resolve until now.

How many time do I have to replace the damn cover?

I went to replace my MacBook discoloration case today. Let’s see how long would it last this time. :D

Update:
Well, it seem the replaced casing is different with the case I got out of the box. The surface is smoother and it seem to solve discoloration issue. I shouldn’t make early judgment, let see what happen until next week.

It seem like it also improve the heat on the surface of the cover, now is less heat compare with last time.

But I am wonder why I got the defect unit at the first place?
